Biggest Congratulations to Phillip Gill, Winner of the First David Barrett Memorial Scholarship from the ASID Foundation!

Hats off to our fellow UCLA Extension Arc-ID student, David Gill, as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship through the ASID Foundation!

The ASID Foundation has chosen Philip Gill as the first recipient of  the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship.  Gill is a masters candidate of Interior Architecture in the collaborative study program between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension and California Polytechnic University, Pomona. The scholarship jury recognized Gill’s thoughtful work and clear demonstration of classical design.

After completing his Masters program, Gill intends to establish an interior design firm focusing on residential interior design and furniture design in San Diego. He plans to use part of his $12,000 scholarship to attend classes at the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICA&A) in New York City, and he eventually hopes to teach and establish a custom furniture line.

“There remains a need for design that is sensitive to the history and historical styles of the area, such as Spanish Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts,” especially as it relates to southern California, Gill explains.

The David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student’s work which demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs. The scholarship was established in memory of David Barrett, FASID, who died on Dec. 8, 2008. Throughout his 58-year career, Barrett practiced mainly residential design. He has lectured, appeared on television and his work has been published in several major design publications.

Congrats to Kristina Kral and Melissa Klink! They tied for runners-up in the Christopher Guy BritWeek Design Competition!

Kristina Kral and Melissa Klink, our very own fellow Arc-ID students, tied for runners up for the Christopher Guy BritWeek Design Award!

The design challenge was to create a lifestyle setting incorporating elements of a living room, bedroom, or dining room and to design one or several of the furniture pieces and accessories utilized in this room.  This setting was meant to inspire Christopher Guy’s upcoming collection “Mademoiselle,” based on our interpretation of Coco Chanel’s home ambiance and furnishings were she alive today.

The first place winner won a month long internship with Christopher Guy at his headquarters in Singapore.  Kristina and Melissa both won a one week internship including accommodation and airfare during the Maison et Object exhibition in Paris in September 2011 where he will be displaying his newest furnishings.

Biggest Congratulations to you both for such an incredible accomplishment!
